CORONADO - Legendary surfer Nat Young will meet and greet his fans Sunday, March 2, from 2-5 p.m. to celebrate the new edition of his book, “The Complete History of Surfing -From Water to Snow.”

The event is free to the public. However, because of limited space, it will only be open to the first 75 people who arrive. No reservations will be accepted. The Coronado Boathouse is located at 1701 Strand Way, just across from the historic Hotel del Coronado (619.435.0155).

The surfing icon will hold court upstairs in the historic Boathouse 1887 Restaurant in Coronado. A narrated slideshow of the most important images from the book will be shown by the author. Young will speak about his career as an athlete and author. Following the film he will sign copies of his book.

Nat Young appeared on every young surfer’s radar in 1966/67 when he won the World Championships of surfing, ironically in San Diego. His new, power-oriented surfing style was based on surfing a shorter board than what was traditionally in use at the time and literally changed the way people surfed and looked at the sport of surfing forever.

Nat’s unique style enabled him to become World Longboard Champion in 1988, 1989, and 1990. He also won the Smirnoff Contest in Hawaii in 1972, and has been Australian junior and open champion several times.

The new edition of “The Complete History of Surfing — From Water to Snow” is published by Gibbs Smith Publishing and contains two new chapters and numerous new photographs.

In the book Nat covers the roots of surfing, the Hawaiian revival, the heyday of the hollow board, evolution of the modern board, the age of surf clubs, world championships, the birth of professionalism, surfer girls, and surfing with a sail.

The two new chapters are “From Water to Snow,” and “Attitude and Hardcore Alternatives.” This colorful, hardcover edition utilizes rare reproductions of early Hawaiian illustrations and Australian surfing. It also includes photographs from some of the world’s greatest shooters.

The Coronado book signing is sponsored by the Coronado Surfing Association and the Coronado Boathouse 1887. For more information on the Coronado Surfing Association visit www.coronadosurfingassociation.org.

The book sells for $39.95 (US) and copies will be available at the Boathouse 1887, Bay Books of Coronado, and on Amazon.com.
