Coronado resident, Rob Gilliland, sent a favorite picture to the Union Tribune’s Travel section and it was published yesterday in the Sunday Travel edition.   Rob shot the picture in 2005 while travelling with his friends, Mel & Mike Whittemore, also Coronado residents, in New Hampshire.

Go to Union Tribune to see this pretty picture.   Congratulations Rob!

On a fall foliage trip in October 2005, Rob Gilliland of Coronado shot his friends Mel and Mike Whittemore sitting on the back porch of the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, N.H.

High Speed Car Chase in Coronado

September 14th, 2008 Posted in Coronado News | No Comments »

A quiet, early morning in Coronado on this Sunday morning was disrupted by a high speed chase through town.   About 7:00am a light blue Ford Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed across the bridge and into Coronado, raced down Orange Avenue as it was being pursued by a number of California Highway Patrol and Coronado Police.  The Mustang turned down Isabella, made a right on E Avenue and was slowed down by a dip at the intersection.   (Let’s hear it for the dips!)   The driver of the Mustang tried to evade authorities by turning into an alley, but ended up being surrounded by law enforcement on 10th Street at E Avenue.   He was arrested and handcuffed.  Lots of neighborhood residents came streaming out of their homes, shaken after hearing the screeching tires and revving engines.

Yours Truly was on the corner of 10th and Orange when the Mustang went past me at an unbelievably fast speed as it turned onto Isabella Avenue, followed by a number of law enforcement vehicles.  An elderly couple had just crossed the street.  5 seconds earlier and this story wouldn’t have had such an uneventful ending.  Was the chase necessary?  It seems that once the car entered Coronado it would have been easy to catch the offender without a high speed chase.  Where can he go if exits from the Strand and the Bridge are blocked.  Was there a more pressing matter involved?   I don’t know, but attempts to get more information about the chase were unsuccessful.
