April 7th, 2008 Posted in Coronado NewsIt’s that time of year again. People are out in their yards, spiffing up for the annual Coronado Home Front judging competition. Home Front Judging starts tomorrow and ends on Wednesday. Over 80 volunteer judges will evaluate each house in Coronado culminating in awards for the Top Ten Home Fronts in Coronado. These Top Ten gardens are the focus of a self-guided tour as a part of the Coronado Flower Show weekend on April 19-20th.
Judging is based on the following criteria totalling 100%:
1. FIRST IMPRESSION - 40%
2. DESIGN - 45%
3. EXECUTION - 15%
Key Home Front Judging Rules
Blue ribbon= First Place;
Red ribbon = Second Place;
Yellow ribbon = Third Place
White ribbon = Honorable Mention
- Each garden should be judged on its own merit and not in comparison with its neighbors. More than one blue ribbon may be awarded in each block if warranted.
- Artificial, plastic or silk plants and flowers will disqualify a homefront. The only exceptions allowed are front door wreaths (not on gates).
- Faux grass is acceptable as long as it adds to the appearance of the yard.
- Homes with walls or fences in front should be judged on the basis of planting and maintenance of the area that is presented to the street and can be seen from the sidewalk. If a resident has a home with a fence or wall, it is suggested that they leave the gate open so that judges can enter and view the garden from within.
