Coronado High School Woodshop Fire

A small fire broke out in the woodshop area of the High School in the late afternoon, about 5:30pm. No injuries were reported. A black plume of smoke billowed out of the woodshop and the school was evacuated. Even before the alarms sounded, faculty and students in the yearbook office felt the heat through the floor.
Fire fighters arrived and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, but extensive smoke damage did occur in the woodshop area. According the Coronado Fire Department, the fire started in a central vacuum system used to keep the woodshop clean. Officials said the school’s sprinkler system helped contain the fire, but firefighters had to get to the source of all the smoke. The source was determined to be several huge filters, which had to be removed.
The school is scheduled to be closed Monday for the Presidents’ Day holiday, but classes will resume as scheduled on Tuesday.
