The Port Commission of the Port of San Diego approved plans for its Public Art Committee to combine resources with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to illuminate the San Diego-Coronado Bridge from underneath with artistic lighting.

A $50,000 budget has been approved by the port board, utilizing grant monies.  The port’s intention is for the project to be “green,” with what it termed “environmentally friendly designs.” The use of alternative power sources — including solar, wind and tidal flow are part of the discussion.   A request for proposalsis expected to go out in March, with the winning design selected by late this year.

Built in 1969, the bridge replaced the ferries that travelled back and forth to San Diego.  The bridge is 2.1 miles long.
