Coronado-based Navy SEAL Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Petty Officer Monsoor was a 25 year old Navy SEAL from Garden Grove, CA. He was part of a sniper security team on Sept. 29, 2006, in the city of Ramadi. An insurgent threw a grenade, which struck Monsoor in the chest before falling in front of him. Monsoor then threw himself on the grenade, killing himself but saving his comrades with his bravery.
Petty Officer Monsoor also had previously received the Silver Star, the third-highest award for combat valor, for pulling a wounded SEAL to safety during a May 9, 2006, firefight in Ramadi.
