A Day In History - August 2, 1969

August 2nd, 2008 Posted in Coronado History

At midnight on August 2, 1969, the Coronado-San Diego Bridge officially opened and the Coronado-San Diego Ferry service officially ended.

People crowded onto the ferries all day and into the night, right up to the end, for one last ride.  At midnight many people who had ridden over later ferries got stranded on the San Diego side and had to ride public transportation back to Coronado, enjoying a first trip over the bridge in the middle of the night with thousands of other vehicles!

To lose the ferry was a sad day for many Coronadans.  The bridge marked the beginning of a new age of development for Coronado and the end of an era.
